What Are Intraocular Lenses?
Essentially an intraocular lens is a tiny artificial lens for your eyes. This lens replaces the natural lens in your eye that is either not working to focus you for near vision or has gotten cloudy and damaged from cataracts. These artificial lenses are designed to last for the rest of your life. Dr. Shatz will take measurements of your eye in order to get the right intraocular lens for your eye so that you will have good eyesight after the procedure. It should fully eliminate the need for glasses.
Having intraocular lens surgery is a surprisingly fast procedure for most patients. During the procedure, your old lens will be broken up by laser and removed, and then a new intraocular lens will be inserted in the place of your natural lens. With your eye numbed from eye drops, you should only feel a light pressure during the procedure. The intraocular lens surgery should take no more than 20 minutes per eye, with another 15 minutes or so to allow for monitoring and to begin the recovery process.
Follow Up to Intraocular Lens Surgery
After the actual surgery it will take between 1-2 weeks for your eye to fully heal. Your eye surgeon will go over a few items to remember during the recovery period, including having some medication eye drops to help promote healing, as well as reminding patients to not rub or press on their eye while it is still healing. Intraocular lens surgery is mostly done for older patients who have developed cataracts; however, this surgery can be performed on almost anyone older than 40 in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, Plantation, Palm Beach, Weston, and the surrounding areas.
