At SightTrust Eye Institute, we believe our patients deserve the very best, and that’s why we are so proud to have Dr. Andrew Shatz as our Medical Director.

Dr. Shatz is a pioneer in laser-assisted cataract and refractive lens exchange surgery, bilateral same-day surgery, premium lens implantation, and phakic intraocular lens implants. Having performed more than 30,000 intraocular procedures, he is considered the Southeast’s Leading implanter of the PanOptix Trifocal® and EVO Visian phakic lenses. He is also one of the first and only surgeons in the country to perform all cataract and lens replacement procedures using the femtosecond laser. Dr. Shatz performs bilateral, same-day surgeries on the vast majority of his patients – performing separate procedures on each eye on the same day, having been performing this technique for over a decade. More than 98% of our patients choose this option that has proven to be both safe and to improve recovery time, getting you back to your normal activities even faster!

Our practice offers a first-of-its-kind premium cataract and intraocular lens surgery center. As these are the only procedures Dr. Andrew Shatz performs, it gives him a unique ability to tailor the results to your individual vision goals, using the most advanced technology available in the field. SightTrust was among the first practices to offer laser-assisted cataract surgery in the country and is one of the only centers to exclusively perform laser-assisted lens surgery on every patient. These procedures are completely painless, and take only a matter of minutes.

The surgery involves replacing the natural lens in the eye with a crystal-clear lens implant that cannot deteriorate. This procedure not only replaces your poorly-functioning lens, but also corrects nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia (the need to wear reading glasses)!

A national lecturer to both optometrists and ophthalmologists, Dr. Shatz is an assistant clinical professor at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He also sits on several clinical advisory panels and has developed various surgical instruments to aid in cataract surgery. Dr. Shatz has operated on leaders in the entertainment, sports, and business world, and has developed techniques and instruments for use in lens surgery. Dr. Shatz is frequently called upon by his colleagues to treat their most difficult cases.

Born and raised in Montreal, Canada, Dr. Shatz received a Bachelor of Science Degree with Honors from the prestigious McGill University, and he attended the Medical College of Georgia, where he graduated cum laude. Following medical school, Dr. Shatz completed an internship in Internal Medicine at Cornell/North Shore University Hospital and his residency in ophthalmology at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, where he was Chief Resident.

Dr. Shatz provides consultative and surgical services to his colleagues in ophthalmology, optometry and various medical specialties. He has been published in the Millennium edition of the Who’s Who in Medicine, and has been recognized as one of the nation’s top ophthalmologists by the Consumer’s Research Council of America. Dr. Shatz is married and the proud father of three.
