Vision improvement procedures at SightTrust Eye Institute are quick, painless, and a revolution in eye care. During these procedures, you are given what is known as conscious sedation or “mini-twilight” sedation. You are not completely asleep where you would need a breathing tube, but you are not completely awake or aware either. The experience is relaxing, quick, and painless, and most people only have a vague memory of the experience. We have created this short summary of what you can expect during your lens procedure to give you an idea of what to expect and to answer the most common questions that you may have:

  • Preparing for your eye procedure. You will receive anesthetic eye drops to numb your eyes – there are no needles or injections. You will also receive medicine to relax you during the procedure. This is usually simply a pill.
  • Laser Treatment. You will be taken to the laser room where you will see several lights in front of you and hear some calming music. You may notice a kaleidoscope of lights in front of you, during the treatment, after which the laser will be complete.
  • Lens Treatment. You will then find yourself in a brighter room. Your eyes will be cleaned – one at a time – with a gentle solution, and then a cover will be placed around your head and chest to keep the area around each eye sterile. You may hear music and people talking, and even see a rainbow of lights, which most people describe as a pleasant experience.
  • The old lens is removed. A microscopic vacuum will suction out the tiny lens fragments that were created with the laser through an opening of only a couple millimeters – so small, in fact, that stitches are not needed.
  • The new lens is inserted. The intraocular lens implant (IOL) is gently inserted through the same incision and then unfolds where the old lens used to be, sealing itself in place.
  • Second eye procedure. In the exact manner, the second eye will be treated after being cleaned the exact same way. Depending on the type of IOL you have chosen with Dr. Shatz and his team, this procedure can improve your distance, intermediate and near vision, providing freedom from glasses at all ranges!
  • Finally, the procedure is complete. You will be given a pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes, and the nurse will go over your after-care procedures to follow at home.

The whole procedure takes around 10 minutes to perform per eye, and at SightTrust Eye Institute, our patients usually choose to have both eyes treated on the same day, rather than on different days. This provides a shorter healing time and quicker visual recovery, allowing you to see the best you can as soon as possible! If you suffer from cataracts or simply want to be free of glasses or contact lenses, call our office to schedule an appointment so we can discuss your visual needs.
